Carruba is a unique Monegasque liqueur made from the fruits of the carob tree (caroubier) – the national tree of Monaco and an important symbol of the local heritage. The carobs are carefully roasted and then slowly macerated, creating a rich and complex liqueur with a distinctly warm character.
In the glass, Carruba impresses with deep aromas of chocolate, coffee and caramel, while spicy and roasted notes gradually develop in the background. The taste is long and complex, with perceptions of candied fig, liquorice and gingerbread, which makes it a surprisingly sophisticated tasting experience.
Carruba is an excellent choice as a digestif after a meal, on its own or with ice, and at the same time, due to its distinct aromatic profile, it is an interesting ingredient for preparing cocktails and as an addition to coffee.
Its story also gives it special value. Carobs were important to the inhabitants of Monaco in the 19th century during times of famine and became a symbol of resilience and perseverance. Carob seeds were once used to weigh precious stones and gold due to their exceptionally uniform weight – the word carat comes from this tradition. Carruba is not just a liqueur, but a modern tribute to the history and character of Monaco, captured in a bottle.
