L’Orangerie is a prestigious Monaco bitter orange liqueur and one of the most recognizable products of La Distillerie de Monaco. It is made by hand from oranges that grow along the streets and boulevards of Monaco, which makes the liqueur an authentic taste of the principality, captured in a bottle.
Monaco has around 600 bitter orange trees, whose fruit is hand-picked by the city’s gardeners every year in January and February. The oranges are grown without the use of pesticides, and after harvesting they are carefully washed, sorted and peeled. Their peel is then slowly macerated in alcohol according to a carefully guarded recipe, which extracts the natural aroma, essential oils and the characteristic citrus character of the liqueur from the fruit.
L’Orangerie is distinguished by its sunny yellow, clear and shiny color. The aroma first expresses notes of marmalade, followed by candied oranges, fresh fruit and delicate hints of anise. Sweet oranges, macerated and candied fruit intertwine on the palate, and the finish is marked by a pleasant, refined bitterness that gives the liqueur its characteristic balance.
It can be served well chilled, on its own or with ice, and is also excellent as a base for cocktails. The Monaco Spritz is particularly popular, where the liqueur is combined with prosecco and ice. It is also useful in the preparation of other cocktails and as an aromatic addition to desserts and ice cream.
L’Orangerie is therefore not just a bitter orange liqueur, but an authentic taste of Monaco – a combination of sun, Mediterranean citrus, local tradition and craftsmanship, which tells the story of the principality in every glass.
